Background of the study
Automated translation software has emerged as an essential tool in bridging language barriers, particularly in multilingual societies like Nigeria. The translation between Hausa and English is critical, given the extensive use of both languages in official, educational, and social contexts (Ibrahim, 2023). Hausa, a major indigenous language with unique syntactic and semantic characteristics, poses specific challenges for automated systems designed primarily for standard English. The complexity of idiomatic expressions, cultural nuances, and contextual variations in Hausa often leads to inaccuracies in machine translation (Chinwe, 2024). Recent advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have spurred the development of more sophisticated translation tools, yet significant gaps remain in achieving high translation accuracy for Hausa-English conversions. This study investigates the effectiveness of current automated translation software for Hausa-English translation, aiming to identify the linguistic challenges and propose enhancements that can improve translation quality and cultural sensitivity (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite significant advancements, current automated translation systems often fail to accurately translate between Hausa and English due to the complexities inherent in Hausa linguistic structures (Adebayo, 2024). These shortcomings hinder effective communication and limit the technology’s applicability in sectors such as education and government. The inability to capture idiomatic expressions and cultural nuances leads to lower accuracy and user dissatisfaction. This study seeks to evaluate the performance of existing translation software, identify critical areas of improvement, and propose solutions that address the unique challenges of Hausa-English translation.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the accuracy of automated translation software for Hausa-English.
  2. To identify the linguistic challenges affecting translation quality.
  3. To propose enhancements for improved translation performance.

Research questions:

  1. How accurately do current systems translate between Hausa and English?
  2. What are the primary linguistic challenges in Hausa-English translation?
  3. How can automated translation software be improved to handle idiomatic and cultural nuances?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Current translation software exhibits significant inaccuracies in Hausa-English translation.
  2. Linguistic complexities, including idiomatic expressions, adversely affect translation quality.
  3. Enhanced machine learning algorithms can improve translation accuracy.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it addresses critical challenges in automated translation technology for Hausa-English, aiming to enhance communication and accessibility. The findings will inform developers and linguists about necessary improvements, contributing to more effective and culturally sensitive translation systems. By focusing on the unique requirements of Hausa-English translation, the research supports digital inclusivity and innovation (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating automated translation software for Hausa-English translation, focusing on linguistic and technological challenges.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Automated Translation Software: Computer programs that convert text from one language to another.
  2. Hausa-English Translation: The process of rendering text between Hausa and English.
  3. Translation Accuracy: The degree to which translated text faithfully conveys the original meaning.
